Most Canadian homeowners end up choosing between welded vinyl and pultruded fibreglass. Both are good products. The honest answer is that the premium is worth it on some elevations and hard to justify on others.
The difference that actually matters
Fibreglass expands and contracts at close to the same rate as the glass it holds. Vinyl moves considerably more. Across a Canadian year — think a 70-degree swing between a January night in Winnipeg and a July afternoon — that difference works the corner welds and the seal around the glass. It is the main reason fibreglass units tend to outlast vinyl ones.
Everything else people cite — strength, thinner sightlines, paintability — is real but secondary for most homes.
Cost and lifespan
- Vinyl — roughly $600 to $1,200 per opening installed. Expect 25 to 40 years.
- Fibreglass — roughly $900 to $1,800 per opening installed. Expect 40 to 50 years.
Over a long enough horizon fibreglass wins on cost per year. Over ten or fifteen years, or if you may sell, it usually does not.
Where the premium earns its keep
- Large fixed or picture windows — more glass means more thermal movement, and fibreglass holds a big unit better.
- South and west elevations — the most UV and the widest daily swing. Cheap vinyl chalks and gets brittle here first.
- Extreme-cold regions — below about −35 °C, budget vinyl stiffens and hardware strains. In Yellowknife and Whitehorse, fibreglass is the default recommendation for good reason.
- Dark exterior colours — dark vinyl runs much hotter in sun and moves more; fibreglass takes dark finishes far better.
Where good vinyl is the sensible choice
- Standard-sized openings on north and east elevations
- Rental or investment property where payback is measured in years, not decades
- A whole-home replacement on a fixed budget — better vinyl everywhere usually beats fibreglass on half the house and originals on the rest
- Milder coastal climates such as Vancouver and Victoria, where the annual swing is far narrower
What to check on the quote, whichever you pick
Frame material matters less than these three: a warm-edge non-metal spacer, a CSA A440 air-tightness rating (ask for A3), and ENERGY STAR certification for Canada — U ≤ 1.22 W/m²·K or an Energy Rating of 34 or better. A premium fibreglass frame with a bare aluminum spacer will still frost at the glass edge.
